Logistics – THACO’s top priority when investing in Chu Lai

In 2003, responding to the “Strategy for the development of Vietnam’s automobile industry to 2010, with a vision to 2020” approved by the Prime Minister, encouraging domestic enterprises to develop production and assembly. Large-scale automobile, Thaco started to invest in Chu Lai Open Economic Zone to build automobile assembly plants, and in 2005 put the first factory into a truck factory. At that time, Thaco faced the most difficult problem of logistics – transportation. Because CKD components from Korea must return to Ho Chi Minh City and then to Chu Lai, through many stages, the cost increases and takes a long time. In order to take initiative and reduce costs, in 2010, Thaco decided to invest in building Chu Lai Port with a capacity of 3 million tons of goods per year, by 2012 to complete phase 1 and put into operation with a bridge length. 300m port, capable of receiving ships of 20,000 tons.

Chu Lai port has the advantage of being a windy seaport, close to National Highway 1A and connecting to Da Nang – Quang Ngai highway; convenient for cargo ships to and from terminals. The port is built according to a modern port model with an integrated berth structure, with advanced larsen piles technology popular in countries around the world; depth before dock -9,5m. This is a general cargo port, which can receive all kinds of goods including: container, general and bulk cargo. The yards are divided by functions such as: container yards, bonded warehouses, warehouses, bales, inspection, …

At the same time, Thaco also invested and put into operation two vessels with a capacity of 15,000 tons with a capacity of more than 1,000 TEUs to operate in China – Chu Lai and Chu Lai – Ho Chi Minh City – Hai Phong. Along with the establishment of shipping companies, road transport, Thaco has formed a package of logistics services including: sea transport, seaports, road transport and warehousing, serving the first in Chu Lai open economic zone and surrounding areas.

Invest in developing logistics activities, meeting integration requirements

In response to the urgent requirements of the integration period, Thaco established the strategic goal of developing Chu Lai – Truong Hai Complex to become an ASEAN regional automotive and supporting industry center; at the same time promote logistics, construction of Chu Lai port to become the leading logistics service center in the Central. In order to implement this strategy, over the years, Thaco has continuously invested in Chu Lai port development. In 2016, the port was expanded upstream, bringing the total length of berths to 500m, capable of simultaneously receiving 3 vessels of 20,000 tons, including general cargo ships and liquid cargo ships. Warehouse system, workshops are also upgraded and expanded with an area of nearly 100,000 m2.

Until now, the investment capital for the port is over 900 billion dong. Port facilities, equipment and facilities are increasingly being completed, including specialized equipment such as liebherr crane, forklift truck, wheel loader, Folk Lift forklift, tow truck, hundreds of public towing vehicles. Large capacity is equipped with advanced GPS equipment, with modern and synchronous loading and unloading equipment, … ensuring services such as: berth service, cargo handling, tallying, packing, storage warehouse; towing and rescuing; Freight forwarding and shipping agents, … with optimal solutions, reasonable costs, bringing added value to customers.

Mr. Tran Huu Hoang – Director of Chu Lai Logistics and Director of Chu Lai Logistics said: In order to optimize transportation costs for Thaco and customers, from 2017, Chu Lai Logistics made a 10% discount for all types of services by changing solutions, finding ways to associate with reasonable partners to reduce costs. As a result, the volume of goods through the port has increased, and the category of goods has also become more and more abundant. In 2017, port throughput reached 1.7 million tons, up 33% compared to 2016 and 55% higher than 2015. Expected output in 2018 reached 3.1 million tons (up 82% compared to with 2017, including 1.5 million tons of bulk cargo and 100,000 TEU containers) and 4 million tons by 2020.

Opening international maritime routes, contributing to developing Central logistics

Implementing plans to open international transport routes, speeding up logistics activities, meeting the demand of forwarding – transporting goods and reducing costs for Thaco and enterprises in the central key economic region, August / 2016, Chu Lai Logistics cooperates with SITC (South Korea) – one of the major shipping companies in Asia, opens an international container shipping route directly from South Korea to Chu Lai port (with frequency capacity of 2 flights / week). This is the first time a port in Ky Ha port area directly welcomes an international container ship of 20,000 tons from Incheon port (South Korea) to dock without having to go through transshipment ports in Da Nang. and Ho Chi Minh City. This event created a turning point for Chu Lai Port to become a direct export port of Quang Nam; create conditions to increase import and export goods from enterprises in Chu Lai Open Economic Zone and neighboring areas (such as plywood, plastic beads, pulp, wood chips, glass, auto parts … ) through Chu Lai port.

On March 25, 2018, Chu Lai Logistics cooperated with APL – one of the largest container shipping companies in the world, opened the Japan international maritime route – Chu Lai and welcomed its first ship to Chu Lai port. . APL lines belong to CMA multinational corporation from France, has a global network with over 170 years of experience. Currently, the company offers more than 120 trains per week and provides logistics services to more than 70 countries. Before coming to Chu Lai, the APL – Chu Lai ship (with a tonnage of 1,000 TEU) dropped by major ports like Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe, Shekou. Goods transported by ship to Chu Lai include: components, spare parts for Mazda cars, machinery and equipment for manufacturing and assembling cars for Mazda Thaco factory and raw materials for industrial parks. Chu Lai Truong Hai Bowl; frequency of exploitation: 1 trip / week, with output of 400-600 TEU / week.

The opening of this maritime route not only reduces the cost of transporting components and goods from Japan (instead of having to return to Ho Chi Minh City before, then to Chu Lai), and at the same time serve the transportation needs. raw materials, spare parts and components of Mazda Japanese suppliers when investing in Chu Lai in the near future; but also create conditions for investors in Chu Lai OEZ and Central – Highlands region to import and export goods through the port, opening up opportunities to trade goods to major seaports in the world.

From April 2018, the Qinzhou – Chu Lai line, co-operated by Chu Lai Logistics with Cosco, was also opened and transported goods directly from Qinzhou port (China) to Chu Lai port and vice versa.

Mr. Tran Huu Hoang said: The opening of these transport routes has significantly contributed to the increase of goods through Chu Lai port. Only in the first 8 months of 2018, the volume of goods through the port reached 2.5 million tons, including container goods, general and bulk cargo, with major goods such as automobile components and construction equipment. , construction materials, cement, wood chips, wood pellets, asphalt, gas, … Of which, imported goods accounted for about 40%, mainly from Korea, Japan and China. For domestic products, now Chu Lai Logistics is actively exploiting export goods of enterprises in Chu Lai KTM Zone, Tam Thang Industrial Park (Quang Nam), VSIP Industrial Park (Quang Ngai) and fruit and agricultural goods. production of localities in the Central Region – Central Highlands.

According to Mr. Hoang, currently Chu Lai Logistics is gradually investing in a warehouse management system based on intelligent management to help customers manage their goods situation conveniently.

At the same time, in order to improve the capacity of the port, Chu Lai Logistics plans to expand the port to the downstream, build a 450-meter wharf in 2020 – 2022; At the same time, Quang Nam province proposed to dredge deep channels up to – 1.5m to ensure the reception of ships of 50,000 tons to improve the capacity of transport and forwarding for the Central region.
